Perma Pure PD Gas Dryer

Nafion tubing for medical applications

For more than 40 years, Perma Pure has been helping medical device manufacturers to develop accurate breath analysis equipment that controls moisture. Their patented Nafion tubing provides dependable moisture removal in a variety of medical applications, enabling accurate analysis and protection of sensing mechanisms. As proud suppliers of Perma Pure products, Fluid Controls explains the benefits of Nafion tubing for medical applications.

What is Nafion tubing?

Perma Pure is the exclusive manufacturer of their proprietary Nafion polymer. This remarkable material has a unique ability to transfer moisture from one side of the membrane to the other. Unlike a porous membrane that depends on the physical size of molecules, Nafion’s selectivity is based on chemical reactivity. This makes it ideal for the removal of water vapour from breath samples prior or to humidify therapeutic gases.

Nafion tubing in respiratory treatment and monitoring

Hospital-acquired pneumonia and other infections are an ever-present risk in respiratory treatment and monitoring applications. However, Perma Pure testing has shown Nafion tubing to be highly effective at preventing bacterial contamination from passing through the material in a humidification setting.

Nafion tubing was placed in a water bath contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococus aureus with dry, clean air passed through the tube. Twenty four hours later, there were no detectable traces of bacteria to be found. That’s because Perma Pure Nafion tubing acts as a barrier, with no transfer of bacteria across the membrane.

Further benefits of Nafion tubing

Perma Pure Nafion tubing meets ISO10993-5 & -10 standards for dermal sensitisation, primary skin irritation and cytotoxicity.

Increase accuracy

Moisture in a gas sample can affect its accuracy. However, dryers using Nafion tubing can extract moisture without removing analytes.

Improve monitoring

Nafion tubing dryers help improve monitoring by increasing accuracy and helping to protecting the sensors in analysis equipment from corrosion.

Perma Pure Nafion tubing is antimicrobial in nature and creates a zone of inhibition around itself where microorganisms simply will not grow.

Who is Perma Pure?

Perma Pure LLC works with medical device manufacturers to develop a wide range of life-saving equipment. Their exclusive technology provides precise moisture control for various medical devices. Their Nafion Tubing delivers accurate analysis for patients with respiratory or pulmonary diseases and is applied across multiple applications including capnography and patient monitoring, anaesthesia monitoring, pulmonary function testing and inhaled gas therapy.
